Gigue

Suite in A minor

Composer Players Instrument Notation Period
von Westhoff, Johann Paul (1665-1705) solo viol Standard Baroque

This is a curious piece from one of the first suites for solo violin. Von Westhoff and J.S. Bach's time as violinists at the Weimar court overlapped by about 18 months from 1703. The Gigue works well as an exercise in double stops, fingering and slurring (although the original is unslurred and that is how violinists play it). The preview shows the original notation. The barring is odd in that a natural-sounding performance displaces the beat by a quarter note so that beats start with the half note. Let me know if you have a theory about this. Versions are included for treble, tenor and bass viol.
